2023 Adjudicators

DR. ASYA GULUA

DR. ASYA GULUA
CORBAN UNIVERSITY, OREGON
Pianist Asya Gulua made her New York City debut as a chamber musician at Alice Tully Hall in 2004. Since then has collaborated with numerous artists throughout the country and abroad. She performs regularly in Davies Symphony Hall as a guest artist of the San Francisco Symphony’s chamber music series and has collaborated with musicians of the Israel Philharmonic as part of a concert series held at the Ralli Museum in Caesarea, Israel. Asya has also appeared in duo piano performances with her husband, pianist and composer, Arsen Gulua, whose works she has premiered at Lincoln Center.

During her years of study at the Juilliard School, Asya developed a passion for more obscure and lesser-known repertoire, which was cultivated by her teacher Jerome Lowenthal. This has led her to frequent discoveries of music by widely recognized as well as overlooked composers, which she enjoys sharing in an intimate setting of a house concert. While living in New York City, an interest in new music was sparked by collaboration with Samuel Zyman, the first living composer Asya has ever worked with. This ongoing interest helped facilitate a relationship with “Cascadia Composers”, a Portland based group of local composers whose works Asya regularly premiers.

Besides having an active performing career, Asya teaches piano at Corban University and maintains a growing private studio in her current home town of Salem, OR. Her students span various ages, levels, and walks of life and Asya bases her teaching on the individual needs of each student. She firmly believes that the skills gained while learning to play the piano are imperative and directly applicable to everyday life.

Asya received initial musical training in her native Moscow at the Gnessin School of Music. In 1996 she immigrated to the United States and enrolled at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan shortly after. Asya holds degrees from The Juilliard School (BM), The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN (MM), and University of Oregon (DMA). She has had the privilege to study with Anna Arzamanova, Edward Auer, Myron Bloom, Mikhail Boguslavsky, Alexandre Dossin, Marjorie Janove, Sergei Lebedev, and Jerome Lowenthal, all of whom continue to be a source of inspiration.

DR. ARSEN GULUA

DR. ARSEN GULUA
WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY, OREGON
Arsen Gulua holds degrees from The Juilliard School (BM), Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (MM) and the University of Oregon (DMA). His teachers have included Yoheved Kaplinsky, Edward Auer and Alexandre Dossin, as well as Shoshana Cohen, Edith Kraus and David Riley.

He began studying piano at the Kharkiv Music School in his native Kharkiv, Ukraine. In 1991 he studied music composition at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem. He has received the American-Israeli Cultural Foundation Award, Susan W. Rose piano fellowship, the William Petschek Scholarship and the Guitteau Scholarship.

Gulua has performed throughout the United States, including at the Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Concert Hall in New York, as well as throughout Israel and Ukraine. He has collaborated with cellist Kyril Zlotnikov and violinist Sergei Bresler, both members of the renowned Jerusalem Quartet.

His wife, pianist Asya Gulua, has premiered his compositions in Lincoln Center. Gulua’s proficiency in composition and growing interest in improvisation leads him to recognize that both are an integral part of performing, and he incorporates these two elements in his teaching.

MARK ANDERSON

MARK ANDERSON
UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, B.C.
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, pianist Mark Anderson has appeared as soloist with Sir Simon Rattle, Nicholas McCegan, William Boughton, George Cleve, Alun Francis, and Adam Fischer and in concert halls such as Alice Tully Hall, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Zurich’s Tonhalle, London’s Wigmore Hall and Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan, among others. His formative training was with Aiko Onishi in California and Benjamin Kaplan in London.
He is the founder of the Röntgen Piano Trio and has collaborated and recorded in the solo, two-piano, song/lieder and chamber music genres. As a solo recording artist, his thirteen solo CDs, all on Nimbus Records, have met with consistent critical acclaim. He has recorded two CDs of the solo piano music of Hans von Bülow and in 2013 embarked on research that explores the solo piano works of Dutch composer Julius Röntgen. His work has led to the release of four CDs of Röntgen’s solo piano music and one of 2-piano music of Röntgen, Reinecke and Brahms. Included on the Bülow and Röntgen discs are previously unrecorded and unpublished works. Newly discovered works by Rontgen and edited by Mr. Anderson are now available through Nimbus Music Publishing. His next recording of Rontgen’s solo piano music will take place in November 2023.

Mark is artistic director of the Challans Concerts in France each summer. These began in 2022 and have met with sold-out audiences in the beautiful Chateau de la vérie near the Loire region of France. In summer 2024, he will return with solo and chamber works for performances that will include the Rontgen Piano Trio.
Mark is chair of the keyboard division at University of British Columbia. His students have been prize-winners in all levels of competition and often go on to successful careers in music.
